Megan Beavers and her husband Zach love animals. So much so that Megan is often a foster parent to rescued cats and kittens.

She told We Love Cats and Kittens: “I work with Happy Feet Pet Rescue as a foster. I take on cats and kittens. I like to do medical, last chance cases where I pull cats/kittens directly from the streets to give them a second chance. I also do bottle babies which are orphaned kittens that need to be bottle fed and cared for every 3 hours.”

Megan also volunteers at Saving Tails Animal Rescue. This caring organisation visit houses where dogs are left on chains outside all day.

They ensure that the dogs have shelter when necessary, are fed and watered and receive any medical care they may need.

This caring lady feels that getting the chance to help animals in need has helped her tremendously with her own issues:

“Rescue work is important to me because I have always struggled with my mental health. I’ve had major depressive disorder for over 20 years now, and am constantly battling myself. But when I’m involved in rescue, I feel fulfilled. I feel happy. I feel like I’m serving something greater than myself, and I’m giving a second chance where there otherwise wouldn’t be one.”

One day Megan and Zach had gone out to attend to one of these dogs when a cat came running up to them. He was obviously very hungry and tried to climb into the car looking for food.

When she tried to grab the cat she realised that he wasn’t alone, he was quickly followed by two others.

After talking to the neighbors she discovered that these cats had been dumped there at least five months ago and nobody in the area could afford to regularly feed them. They were slowly starving to death taking shelter in an empty house.

On closer examination Megan discovered that all of the cats were really skinny. Their fur was missing and thin in places due to stress bathing, they had wormy bellies and were covered in fleas.

Megan explains: “This was a huge concern as we are located in the Midwest, and outdoor animals can freeze to death. We gave them as much food as we had, and we noticed they were so hungry they growled when they ate.”

Megan knew that she had to act quickly, these poor kitties were starving to death. Luckily she had a cat carrier in the car and managed to coax them in with food and some gentle shoves.

These three kitties that had spent a terrible time on the street, were now huddled together in the cat carrier and finally felt safe.

Once back at the house Megan gave them a thorough examination. She gave them weight checks, a full physical exam and provided them with flea meds and worm meds.

She was sure that these kitties started their life as indoor cats – somebody obviously got sick of them and threw them out like garbage.

She was white-hot with rage and couldn’t believe how somebody could do that to these sweet cats.

Tears filled her eyes because she knew these boys deserved so much better, and she was determined to give it to them.

After a few days and getting to know their personalities she decided to name them after the rascally characters from Harry Potter: James, Lupin, and Sirius.

“My husband and I are always using themed names for our fosters. These 3 boys were so mischievous and I think we wanted to name the all black cat Sirius, and the rest of the names followed naturally. We usually bounce around names until one just feels right, and these ones were just so perfect for them.”

She says that the three boys have lived up to their Harry Potter cat names:

“Sirius is more quiet and he’ll hang back while the others get into trouble, but he’s always waiting in the wings to join. He’s not quite as affectionate, and just takes a minute to warm up.”

“James is SUCH an attention whore. He LOVES attention and being the center of attention and the star of the show.”

sirius

“And Lupin is just a goof ball. He’s relaxed and chill, and we used to call him Loopy Loo because he was just so silly, but also loved attention.”

These adorable boys loved hugs and snuggles and they all slept together in one cat bed. They now seemed so carefree and happy, and when playing they especially loved it when the wand toys came out.

Megan was now sure that these were adoptable indoor cats so she reached out to Happy Feet Pet Rescue to get them fully vetted and ready for adoption.

Meanwhile, Megan was still angry about the terrible situation that awful person left them in, so she vented her frustration by placing a message on Reddit.

It read: “Do NOT throw your INDOOR CAT outside. They can’t survive outside. If they were born and raised inside, they can’t go outside unharnessed and unsupervised. They will die. These cats were going to die without any human help. They cannot hunt and they will starve to death if they aren’t eaten first. This is crueler than euthanasia or putting a cat in a shelter. This is the worst option you can do, and if you do this you are a garbage human being.”

Megan received a huge amount of support with many people sharing similar stories about their own rescues.

And while this made her feel better, there was one person her message reached that gave her much joy.

Emily Ellis had been searching for the right cats to join her family and felt that the three boys would be a perfect fit.

She told We Love Cats and Kittens: “I was browsing Reddit at 1 in the morning when I came across Megan’s post and I needed to know if they had found a permanent home yet, and if not then I wanted to see if  we could give them one.”

Even though they lived four states over, Megan also thought that Emily and her partner Caleb would be a good fit for the boys.

It was time to contact Happy Feet to start the adoption process.

Meanwhile Megan and Zach continued to enjoy the company of their three rescues that filled their life with joy.

Megan said: “They experienced the worst mankind had to offer. They grew up indoors with their family, only to be tossed out to live in the streets of an urban area in the middle of winter. They starved, they struggled, and they suffered. But now they have a family.”

It was time for the adoption so Emily and Caleb took a 2 hour flight and rented a car at the airport.

It would be an 11 hour drive back to their home but they felt this would be much better than putting the three boys through the stress of getting on a plane.

“The boys were very well behaved, but it took them a little while to warm up to the idea of a car ride. We put the seats down and placed their carriers in the car with the flaps open so they could come out on their own terms.”

James was the first to come out of his carrier and before long was seated on Caleb’s lap watching the world go by.

Next was Sirius, Emily said that he loved sitting on the dashboard. But the only problem was he kept blocking her view – not ideal when you’re driving!

Eventually Caleb managed to coax Lupin out from his carrier and the three of them finally settled down for the rest of the journey.

Emily was impressed that none of them were car sick or went to the bathroom, which was a relief.

snuggles

We asked Emily how they were doing now: “They seemed to adjust to their new home rather quickly. When we let them out in the apartment they immediately began exploring, and it quickly became their home.”

“Since then they’ve been doing really well. They’re very playful and very friendly. They love to wake us up before we’re really ready to get up by wrestling at the foot of the bed, so that’s an adjustment. When they aren’t running around and chasing each other, they love to cuddle or sit on our laps.”

This wonderful couple spared no expense turning their home into a cat’s dreamland and the boys really appreciate it, they will be loved for the rest of their lives.

3 boys

Megan is so happy that they found the right family, she gets regular updates from Emily with pictures and videos showing how happy they are.

She told us: “Saving these boys was such a powerful moment for me because I felt such a strong, overpowering conviction to save them at that very moment. I knew I couldn’t leave them behind. There are so many things in life we can’t change, and there have been foster kittens that I couldn’t save. But I could save these guys, and taking those moments of empowerment reminds me that saving these lives and sharing love and kindness freely makes me unstoppable.”
